The trip from Anchorage heads up through Palmer leaving the Matanuska Sustina valley. The road winds along the Matanuska river where a stop will be made at the Matanuska glacier rest area for pictures. Glennallen is a short trip away where a stop will be made for food, restrooms, and a cappuccino if desired. A few miles down the road a stop will be made at the Alaska pipeline visitors area where you can wonder at the marvel that was completed in 1977. Once in Chitina the wonderful 60 mile McCarthy road begins. The last leg of the journey takes a couple hours depending on how many moose and bears we stop to watch.
